Region

Beechworth

Beechworth is one of the great wine regions of Australia and is the home to some of our countries finest winemakers. Warm sunny days, cool nights and soils of sandstone, gravel and granite over clay create the perfect conditions to produce ultra premium Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz, some of which have beaten even the best expressions from France. This is holy ground.

Traviarti

At around 600m altitude on red decomposed shale and mudstone soils just above the Beechworth township our Red Hill vineyard is 100% Nebbiolo, planted to multiple clones on a combination of different rootstocks and own root material. With just over 1,000 vines our vineyard is considered tiny although if you multiply 1,000 by every time you stop to look, prune or tend it quickly begins to appear quite large! Red Hill rises to the east behind Beechworth coincidentally also home to another Nebbiolo vineyard planted just weeks after ours. Two people thinking this is the spot for Nebbiolo feels like a good omen to us. We are aiming to create a vineyard intrinsically in balance ie the goldilocks vineyard with just the right amount of fruit to just the right amount of leaves and just the right amount of root system. So far so good. The fruit has shown intensity with a combination of good colour and acidity. In 2018 we planted a new vineyard on the Beechworth Wangaratta Rd, a venture with a friend which will become our Rosso block of 80% Nebbiolo and 20% Barbera. This will also be our ongoing source of Chardonnay and the potential of this site is very exciting.

Fighting Gully Road

Sitting atop the golden granite township of Beechworth, amongst stunning gardens, is Mayday Hills, a decommissioned asylum dating back to 1867. The old maintenance workshop of the asylum has been cleared of wood lathes and blacksmithing furnaces, and is now where Fighting Gully Road wines are made. This is a collaborative space, shared with friend and fellow winemaker, Adrian (A.) Rodda. Adrian and Mark have been sharing a workspace for ten years. It began in a little winery at Smiths vineyard, then newly-leased by Mark, where the two progressed from pressing 10 tonnes of fruit in year one to 125 tonnes in year two. In search for a little more room to move, Mark and Adrian moved the winery to a spacious old apple store in the neighbouring township of Stanley, only a ten minute drive away, but an additional 300m above sea level. After two vintages of having their fermenting reds get so cold that they would stop work (fermenting) and require reinoculation, luck so happened that the eclectic Mayday Hills maintenance workshop appeared.

Serere Wines

To be bound, to be interwoven, to be entwined.Serere is the concept of bringing together the art of both viticulture and winemaking - each needing the other to create and craft great wine. Wine and food featured at the forefront of Joe's professional career, having mastered the culinary arts as a chef for 12 years, he turned his passion for creations of the palate to wine in 2010. After spending many years assisting and making wine for others, in January 2018 Serere was born out of a desire to continue to make wine, but instead for ourselves, and in a way which followed our philosophy. For us, Serere is at the center all things, as everything is bound to something else; soil to grapes, viticulture to winemaker, food to wine, and art to passion.

Virago

NEBBIOLO is our sole focus at Virago, along with the promotion of Beechworth as a unique wine region. With the exception of our La Mistura wines, each Virago Nebbiolo vintage receives identical vinification at the winery in order to showcase the effect of our viticultural practices each year (and mother nature’s influence!) Our La Mistura label is reserved for vintages in which our harvest required a bit of “mixing it up” in the winery.
