About the wine

Tasting notes

An exceptional release of the Vat 9 Shiraz. An alluring, heady bouquet of black, blue and red berries, musky spices, meaty and chocolatey undertones and fragrant cedar/vanilla oak lifted by a fresh whiff of cracked pepper. It’s long and supple, with remarkably intense, mouthfilling flavours of small berries tightly knit with tight-grained oak and elegantly supported by a pliant spine of fine, but genuinely firm tannins. It builds richness and complexity towards its long and lingering finish. It will age superbly. Drink to 2044

Expert review

Medium purple with a bloody core and a highly aromatic and complex nose of lavender, rose, cracked pepper, dark blue and red fruit, cured meat, savoury spice, cedar, plenty of tar and a mineral edge that lays underneath it all. In the mouth it’s generously medium bodied, complex, spicy and evocative with an intensity that captures you. Concentrated flavours of plum, black/blue fruit, dark cherry, brûléed Demerara sugar and baking spice show in layers, reaching with depth and width. A fine spread of firm, prickly tannins grip with texture and tension, teasing the palate in a playful way, while a beam of confident berry acidity illuminates the fruit and gives good drive. It’s long, powerful with intensity and seems to crescendo with time. This is bloody good drinking, and even with 8 years of cellar time, it’s still a baby. Wonderful.

Wine Worth Writing About

The Grape

Shiraz or Syrah

Shiraz, or Syrah, is one of the most loved, rich and powerful red wine varieties made famous for its mineral and structured expressions from the Rhône in France and the rich and decadent fruity expressions from the Barossa Valley in Australia. Full bodied, rich in antioxidants and generously fruity, Shiraz sits proudly on the table for those that like their wine big and bold. Think violets, blackberries, plum, chocolate, pepper, black olive, liquorice, rosemary, tobacco and spice...i'm thirsty already!
