With so much diversity of wine in Victoria, it’s almost impossible to define stylistically, but rest assured, with so many varieties grown and outstanding wines being made, you’re guaranteed to find your own bottle of heaven.

Lethbridge Wines grew from a friendship between Ray Nadeson, Maree Collis and Adrian Thomas. Back in the mid 1990’s we were busy establishing careers in science and medicine and shared a love of great wine which ultimately became quite an obsession. The afternoons sipping Burgundies were replaced by weekends searching for the perfect vineyard site and then by afternoons digging holes and planting vines. For two of us (Maree and Ray) the passion for wine drove us to a tree change, and in 2003 after 7 years of balancing careers in science and running a vineyard and winery, we made Lethbridge Wines our reison d'etre. Our aim is to produce natural, savory wines that focus on balance and texture with a real sense of place or terroir.Maree Collis and Ray Nadeson are not your average winemakers of a boutique winery. Both were initially trained as research scientists and hold PhD degrees in chemistry and medicine, respectively. While combining their scientific careers with winemaking, Maree and Ray completed the winemaking degree at Charles Sturt University. Ray states, "winemaking is not really that different to science, both are creative and both involve 99% perspiration, 1% inspiration".Not surprisingly, the site at Lethbridge was selected based on scientific principles such as soil type, degree days and other climatic indicators, yet when the three partners first explored the property they discovered an ancient old wooden fermentation vat in one of the old sheds. Discussion with the previous owner (Ivor Perdrisat) revealed that his family, Swiss in origin, had planted a vineyard on the exact site back in the 1870's before the discovery of phylloxera in the region. The old wine vat has been reincarnated as a beautiful timber tasting bench in the cellar door. This story is compelling in the connection between traditional wisdom and modern science.

At around 600m altitude on red decomposed shale and mudstone soils just above the Beechworth township our Red Hill vineyard is 100% Nebbiolo, planted to multiple clones on a combination of different rootstocks and own root material. With just over 1,000 vines our vineyard is considered tiny although if you multiply 1,000 by every time you stop to look, prune or tend it quickly begins to appear quite large! Red Hill rises to the east behind Beechworth coincidentally also home to another Nebbiolo vineyard planted just weeks after ours. Two people thinking this is the spot for Nebbiolo feels like a good omen to us. We are aiming to create a vineyard intrinsically in balance ie the goldilocks vineyard with just the right amount of fruit to just the right amount of leaves and just the right amount of root system. So far so good. The fruit has shown intensity with a combination of good colour and acidity. In 2018 we planted a new vineyard on the Beechworth Wangaratta Rd, a venture with a friend which will become our Rosso block of 80% Nebbiolo and 20% Barbera. This will also be our ongoing source of Chardonnay and the potential of this site is very exciting.

Bindi’, 50 kilometres north-west of Melbourne in the Macedon Ranges, is the family property of the Dhillon family. Originally purchased in the 1950s as part of the larger grazing farm ‘Bundaleer’, ‘Bindi’ is a 170 hectare farm of which 7 hectares are planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Fifteen hectares are dedicated to managed plantation eucalypts for high grade furniture timber whilst the remainder of the land is maintained as remnant bush land and important indigenous grasslands. The Bindi vineyard is the fundamental focus of our endeavors. Our vineyard and winemaking philosophy is to seek balance and purity in the expression of our various individual vineyard sites and this philosophy is applied to farming and conservation at ‘Bindi’; the preservation of the natural harmony. The Bindi labels featured under the link ‘wine styles’ provide some of the stories of people and place that define our endeavour.

Sitting atop the golden granite township of Beechworth, amongst stunning gardens, is Mayday Hills, a decommissioned asylum dating back to 1867. The old maintenance workshop of the asylum has been cleared of wood lathes and blacksmithing furnaces, and is now where Fighting Gully Road wines are made. This is a collaborative space, shared with friend and fellow winemaker, Adrian (A.) Rodda. Adrian and Mark have been sharing a workspace for ten years. It began in a little winery at Smiths vineyard, then newly-leased by Mark, where the two progressed from pressing 10 tonnes of fruit in year one to 125 tonnes in year two. In search for a little more room to move, Mark and Adrian moved the winery to a spacious old apple store in the neighbouring township of Stanley, only a ten minute drive away, but an additional 300m above sea level. After two vintages of having their fermenting reds get so cold that they would stop work (fermenting) and require reinoculation, luck so happened that the eclectic Mayday Hills maintenance workshop appeared.

Vinea Marson is a small, family owned and operated winery in the heart of Heathcote in Central Victoria. Our inspiration stems from Mario’s Italian heritage – Mario’s grandfather made Friulano, Cabernet and Merlot and his great-grandfather was chief winemaker for the local padrone. His father, Giuseppe, planted rows of vines in their Melbourne backyard to bring Italian wine to the dinner table each night. Making wine and serving it with plentiful Italian food was a Marson way of life. Mario and Helen together with their daughters, Laura, Madeleine and Emily, embarked upon their own journey - establishing Vinea Marson. Since 2000 the Marson family have cultivated vines in the ancient soils of Heathcote with dedication and passion, bringing premium quality wine to tables in Australia and overseas.

To be bound, to be interwoven, to be entwined.Serere is the concept of bringing together the art of both viticulture and winemaking - each needing the other to create and craft great wine. Wine and food featured at the forefront of Joe's professional career, having mastered the culinary arts as a chef for 12 years, he turned his passion for creations of the palate to wine in 2010. After spending many years assisting and making wine for others, in January 2018 Serere was born out of a desire to continue to make wine, but instead for ourselves, and in a way which followed our philosophy. For us, Serere is at the center all things, as everything is bound to something else; soil to grapes, viticulture to winemaker, food to wine, and art to passion.

Monak Wine Co is the culmination of 25 years of winemaking experience in the Murray Darling. We are a very small family-owned producer whose focus is on hand made small-batch wines working with the very best local growers. Our wines start in the vineyard. We taste every inch of the vineyards with our growers to find the best selections and harvest times for our wines. Our crush is small, only 20 tonnes for our first vintage in 2020. This allows us to give the fruit the best care when it comes into the winery.
