High up in Montalcino is La Ragnaie, owned by winemaker Riccardo Campinoti and wife Jennifer. The name is derived from the Italian word for spider's web (Ragnatela), because the traditional bird-catching nets that can be seen on the labels of his wines are visually reminiscent of a spider's web and were stretched from this highest point for bird hunting. The success story of Le Ragnaie has also been shaped by the early conversion to organic viticulture and by the fact that Riccardo has consciously decided against a marmalade-laden and sometimes somewhat overloaded modern wine style. Instead, his long-lived red wines convince with a fruity-spicy bouquet and an unmistakable freshness, for which he even lets the Sangiovese grapes rest on the skins for up to 90 days to absorb the colour pigments, the tannins and the aromatic components of the grape variety. With the 2017 vintage, the third single-vineyard Brunello Le Ragnaies celebrates its debut. Only 3,000 bottles of this wine, which comes from Montalcino's highest vineyard, will be bottled. The choice of the vineyard, situated over 600 metres above sea level, is also due to climate change, where winemakers are increasingly looking for cooler sites for Sangiovese - and the result is again a Brunello of the absolute special class

About the wine

Tasting notes

The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Passo del Lume Spento lifts up with a delicate bouquet of sweet herbs and tobacco, incredibly lifted yet spicy, and a bit exotic, as a flourish of mineral-laden crushed stone fills the glass. It’s silky-smooth and savory, presenting a pure display of wild berries enlivened by bright acidity and a salty flourish. This tapers off lean and mineral in nature, with grippy tannins offset by a burst of sour citrus. The Passo del Lume Spento hails from what Riccardo Campinoti believes is currently the highest-elevation vineyard-producing Brunello in the region, at 621 meters. It found a very pretty balance in the 2017 vintage

The Grape

Sangiovese

Sangiovese is a Tuscan red grape variety that has become the most planted and famous variety in Italy. You may know this variety by a few other names like Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Montefalco Rosso or Carmignano, but rest assured it's all the same grape, but it may grow in different regions. Sangiovese is made for food and shows with aromas and flavours of cherry, red berries, roasted tomato, balsamic, Italian herbs, coffee and cured meats, backed by cutting acidity and a good grip of tannins. The best examples come from Montalcino (Brunello di Montalcino) and can age decades!
