Craft vs Science

Craft vs Science Boutique Wines is a premium small batch winery founded by Stuart Bloomfield in the Barossa Valley. "It has always been my dream to make premium quality wines that I am passionate about and people love to drink."These delicious wines are meticulously hand crafted from our family's vineyards, with the vision to be shared around the dining table with family and friends. Our philosophy: In the winemaking industry there is often a divide between people in their approach or philosophy to making wine. Some are very traditional and artistic in their practices, who are either continuing with methods that have been passed down to them, that they have learnt first-hand or are using a creative flare to push boundaries. While there are others who view modern technology, science and analytics as crucial to making their wines. While both sides can make good wine, we believe a combination of the Craft aspects of winemaking and viticulture along with the Science and modern technology can make something truly special.

Wendouree Wines (AP Birks)

Wendouree vineyards date back to 1893 and its limited production, high quality, unique wines have a reputation for lasting indefinitely. They have achieved a kind of local (Australian) cult status amongst wine drinkers in the know. They are not available retail, the mailing list is the only way to buy them on release and the mailing list remains one of the hardest to get on in Australia. For many lovers of big Australian red wines the discussion begins and ends with Wendouree. Truly exceptionally cellar-worthy, these full bodied and gripping red wines are the result of extremely low yields from the very old, unirrigated vines of Shiraz, Malbec, Mataro (Mourvèdre), and Cabernet Sauvignon, many of them growing on untrellised bush-vines... (Wendouree is) a place of honest, old fashioned, careful and artisan wine making where no short cuts are taken, ever.

Terre à Terre

Exceptional wines for those that understand greatness.Terre à Terre/Daosa wines are run by powerful couple Xavier Bizot and Lucy Croser. We manage the Crayères Vineyard ourselves and retain all the fruit every year for our own wines. The close spaced (1.5m x 1.5m) Crayères Vineyard is cane pruned (Guyot Double), and is pruned by hand. The rocky soils of the Crayères Vineyard do not allow us to control undervine weed growth mechanically. We limit the use of chemicals sprays to sulphur and copper and some preventive fungal sprays. We manually manage trellis and shoot growth during the growing season to optimise sunshine in the canopy, and we also control yields with manual bunch thinning when required. All of our fruit is handpicked and delivered to the Tiers winery in the Piccadilly Valley for processing. Our precision in the management of the Crayères Vineyard, combined with our 18 years of experience with the ecosystem of this very unique vineyard allows us to produce exceptional fruit. We now have over 12 years of experimenting with the fruit from our Crayères Vineyard and have determined that the best wine styles for the vineyard are:Our barrel aged and textural Sauvignon Blanc, harvested late, which is reminiscent of some of the best white Bordeaux. Our Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc-based Shiraz blends, which follow the long tradition of blending Shiraz and Cabernet in South Australia to make some of the best fine wines Australia can produce.

Eight at the Gate

Eight at the Gate is owned and run by two sisters, Jane and Claire. We make elegant wines that we love to drink. Our name was inspired by two complementary processes. We both grew up on the land and both have four kids each, so eight kids (or more) hanging on our front gate is a common sight. The same love, perseverance and hard work that goes into raising our eight children, goes into growing our grapes and creating our wines. At Eight at the Gate we are not restricted by tradition and corporate ownership. We have the freedom to make exceptional wines using the best techniques from around the world, and that is what we do. Only our best grapes go into our own wines, and we only make our wines when the grape quality is exceptional. The rest of our grapes are sold and go into some of Australia’s most iconic wines. We chose Wrattonbully to put down our roots because of its rich Terra Rossa soils, pristine underground water, rolling hills and cool inland maritime climate – the ideal place to grow premium wine grapes.Eight reasons our wine stands apart: 1. Location and Climate2. Water and soil 3. Balance – in the vineyard and the winery4. Exceptional fruit5. Experienced team6. Sustainable practices at every level7. Real oak barrels8. Meticulous patience.Great wines are made in the vineyard. We aim to produce elegant, sophisticated wines that require little or no intervention.Cheers Jane and Claire

Tapanappa

Tapanappa is the 21st century chapter of an adventure that pioneered the modern era of the Adelaide Hills wine region.Tapanappa is the name that Brian Croser has given to his ongoing family-owned, fine-wine enterprise based in the Piccadilly Valley where it began more than 40 years ago as Petaluma. After a storied history as the first and one of the finest of the Adelaide Hills wine producers, Petaluma was taken over dramatically by corporate giant Lion Nathan in 2001, although the Crosers retained ownership of their family home and their beloved Tiers Chardonnay vineyard at the foundation winery site.

Schwarz Wine Company

A FAMILY AFFAIRThe Schwarz family has a long history in the Barossa and we are now into our 5th generation in the region. Like many families within the region, we haven’t always been involved in the wine industry. My Father was born at a historic property on the Gomersal Plains just outside of Tanunda. Although there was a small vineyard on the property it was a working sheep station and that was the main source of income. He attended Seppeltsfield School and for some time lived in a small workers’ cottages in Seppeltsfield. At the age of 14 he started working in the vineyard for his uncle, Albert Nicolai, eventually purchasing the land and beginning to add more parcels of vineyards over the years. My Father won the state pruning championships held in the Clare Valley in the mid-1980s and my parents now live in Bethany opposite our Home Block Grenache vineyard and in close proximity to our vineyards on Thiele and Nitschke Block.I convinced my Father to part with a small parcel of Nitschke Block Shiraz in the 2001 vintage and followed with the Thiele Road Grenache from 2002 and the Schwarz Wine Co was off and running.Today, our “family” has grown and although the fruit from my parent’s vineyards provides the backbone of my wines, I have built relationships with some of the Barossa’s finest grape-growers, and their hard work, passion, and dedication to their craft makes my job much easier in the winery.THE WINE MAKERI came to winemaking via a circuitous path. While I grew up surrounded by vines at my parent’s property in Bethany, I initially studied wine marketing at the University of Adelaide. On completion of my studies I headed overseas visiting Bordeaux, Burgundy, and The Napa, working in Stellenbosch and Zell, Germany. It was during my travels that I realised that my calling was winemaking rather than marketing and on my return to the Barossa in 1998 I began working in local wineries.THE VINEYARDThe vineyards I source my fruit from are the lifeblood of my wines. From my parent’s vines in Bethany to the relationships I have built over the years with some of the best growers in the Barossa Valley, I am lucky to have access to some of the regions finest fruit with old vines stretching back to 130 years of age.

Vintage Longbottom

THE STRENGTH AND LOVE OF FAMILY AND WINE DRIVES THE LONGBOTTOM STORY INTO A NEW ERAKim Longbottom has built her wine business around the core message that family comes first. Twenty years after releasing her first wave of classic red wines with husband Mark from the Limestone Coast’s famed Padthaway region, a new chapter in the Vintage Longbottom story has begun with the arrival of daughter Margo into the company.Their family story continues and now includes the next generation.Margo brings with her a family-instilled passion for wine as well as a vibrant new outlook stemming from her studies in fashion, digital marketing and business.Surrounded by wines and vines all her life, she freely admits she loves the lifestyle that comes with the business as well as the hard work, from getting her hands dirty during vintage to the essential sharing of the admin load and vital new community connections via social media. The wine operation established by Kim and Mark Longbottom, Henry’s Drive Vignerons, paid direct homage to the history of their property where a horse-drawn mail and passenger coach service, run by Henry John Hill, operated in the 19th century.Like the coach drivers of that era, who earned the much-admired respect of locals for their enduring energy and devotion to duty, Kim and Mark became leading family wine producers connected deeply to the Padthaway region in south-east South Australia, now part of the larger zone known as the Limestone Coast. The Longbottoms set up a range of highly regarded wine brands marking the property’s history: Henry’s Drive, The Postmistress, The Scarlet Letter and Morse Code. After Mark’s death in 2008, Kim continued the business with the same commitment and devotion, and with Margo now on board the time came to continue the family story with a fresh start as mother and daughter in new surroundings.
