I made this wine in partnership with my friend Darrin Gaffy of Principia Wines win the Mornington Peninsula. The 21 vintage in Mornington has delivered stunning chardonnay. The cooler vintage conditions enabled the fruit to ripen slowly whilst retaining freshness and acidity. We have access two parcels of my favourite Chardonnay clone, P58 (the same clone as Giaconda) from vineyards in Balnarring and Merricks North. This is a Chardonnay of the highest order.

A true vin de gard and a timely slap in the face for the makers and critics who believe it’s impossible to have chardonnay with both finesse and flavour. Piercing aromas of ruby grapefruit, peach and nectarine knit with a subdued presence of nutty oak and creamy yeast-derived influences, cinnamon and ginger. Translucently clear, it’s vivacious and voluminous, with an explosive flash of fruit that eases down a fine, powdery spine towards a brittle, savoury finish wrapped in mouth-watering acids. Superb shape and style – the new Peninsula benchmark. (Jeremy Oliver)

A light-yellow gold with a touch of lime a nose that transports. Fine layers of yellow apple, charred stonefruit, orange zest, lemongrass, galangal, smoky white pepper and brûlée oak sit over a bed of complex minerality that is more akin to Chablis than the Mornington. It’s mesmerising! In the mouth it’s an elegant and masterful expression of both grape and its makers with a core of shimmering minerality and deeply flavoured fruit that echoes the nose, paired perfectly with sublime French oak and balanced by a glowing natural acidity that drives. More Burgundian than Australian, it maintains a finesse and composure found in the greatest examples of Chardonnay. It moves slowly, steadily and pleasurably to a long tail that grows in complexity as it opens. An absolute stunner!!!
One of the most planted, versatile and popular white varieties in the world. As a stand alone grape, Chardonnay is not the most interesting, nor complex varietal out there...but in the hands of a great winemaker it can be turned into one of the world's greatest pleasures! From the best bubbles of Champagne, to the lean, unoaked and mineral expressions of Chablis and the opulent, oaked and complex whites of Burgundy, Chardonnay is responsible for making some of the greatest expressions of white wine on the planet.
