Picolit, the northeastern Italian variety - English translation, 'small stalks' - isn't well-known here, but it does offer a different side to dessert whites. Whole-bunch pressed into barrel, inoculated with cultivated yeast, fermentation in new barrique and seasoned French oak barrels, matured on lees for 10 months.

With 20 grams residual sugar, it's medium-dry in sweetness with plenty of acidity and character to burn. It doesn't rely heavily on sugar to fly. Apricot, peach skin and quince are joined by a herbal intensity that builds throughout the middle palate. Intense and mouthfilling, just not your usual sweetie.
